ColdCPU has sent over some Ultra Silver II thermal compound. It is similar to Artic Silver II in makeup, with ultra pure (99.9+%) micronized silver and high silver content (~75 – 85% by weight). It has a thermal conductivity of (~ 8-9 W/m*K). I will be testing it against Artic Silver II and Artic Silver 3. This Ultra Silver is about half the price of Artic Silver 2 and 3, this 6 gram tube costs about as much as a 3 gram tube of Artic Silver 2 or 3.
Here is a shot of the tube, looks a lot like Artic Silver II and 3 doesn’t it?
I squeezed a little out of the tube onto a piece of paper, it looks a lot like Artic Silver 2 but seemed to be a little harder to move around.
I be using the following test bed setup to test this Ultra Silver II thermal compound it is the exact same setup that was used for testing of the Artic Silver II and Artic Silver 3
I will be using an external thermal probe to take the temperatures as I did while testing Artic Silver II and 3. The ambient temperature of the room was 24.6 degrees Celsius. I let the computer idle for about 30 minutes and took the readings. As you can see Ultra Silver II is 3 degrees higher than Artic Silver II and 3.5 degrees higher than Artic Silver 3.
I then used Prime95 to torture test the CPU and bring it to its load temperature. At load temps Ultra Silver II was 3.2 degrees higher than Artic Silver II and 3.7 degrees higher than Artic Silver 3.
Ultra Silver II does not perform as well as Artic Silver II or 3 however you get 6 grams of Ultra Silver II for the same price that you would pay for 3 grams of Artic Silver II or Artic Silver 3. If you are not concerned with getting every little degree off your CPU is possible and want a lot of a good thermal compound for a very good price I would definitely recommend this to you so head on over to ColdCPU pick some up.
