NEW Super Mario Bros. Review (Nintendo DS)!
OCmodshop :: Saturday, July 01, 2006

Mario is back in yet another game. Yes, the pudgy plumber can’t seem to get enough of stomping on those goombas, and rescuing princesses from turtle-dinosaurs could be his only hobby (besides eating of course…). Mario seems to enjoy these monotonous adventures, and for some god-forsaken reason, so do we. Welcome to the *New* Super Mario Bros.!

This time, Mario is happily strolling with the Princess Peach, when she notices that her beloved castle is on fire! While Mario runs off to investigate, Princess Peach is kidnapped by an unknown monster! Witnesses claim the monster is Bowser Jr., who seems to think that Princess Peach is his mother. (Peach is evidently a promiscuous Princess….she must have had strong “mushroom goggles” to mistake Bowser for mustachioed Mario….) The story is…. you guessed it! Rescue Peach from Bowser Jr. and once again save the Mushroom Kingdom.

Oh, Mario! You’re so HUGE!

The Glory Days of the Atari 8-bit Computers
Thursday, June 29, 2006
Atari built a series of 8-bit home computers based on the MOS Technology 6502 CPU, starting in 1979. Over the next decade several versions of the same basic design would be released. These included the original Atari 400 and 800, and their successors, the XL and XE series of computers. However, the models remained largely identical internally. They were the first home computers designed with custom coprocessor chips. IBM even considered licensing Atari for their own personal computer, but decided to build their own. However, design flaws, internal corporate turmoil and difficult, fast-changing market conditions contributed to the 8-bit Atari computers’ eventual demise.

Blazing Angels – Squadrons of WWII Review (Xbox 360)
OCmodshop :: Wednesday, June 28, 2006

The Xbox 360 has seen it’s first 6 months come and go. And what do we have to show for it? One really kick ass RPG in Elder Scrolls, one ball busting first person shooter in Call of Duty 2 and one psycho crazy driving game in Burnout revenge. From there, we get a couple of decent FPSs a solid fighting game with Dead or Alive a passable action title in Tomb Raider and a slightly better then average horror title in Condemned. From there it all goes to crap, King Kong was a major disappointment, the Xmen game stunk, Rumble Roses XX was disappointing. Not the cadre of games I had hoped for at this point, but not wholly disappointing either.

Now this is really just a brief synapsis of the 60 plus games available on the 360, and I’m sure there would be some folks out there that would disagree with me in my above statement and that’s fine. But my point is that there seems to be a real slow process in releasing 360 games, and when they do come out, they aren’t necesarily the “future of gaming” experiences that we were all promised.

Thermaltake Aguila is a bad-ass Gorilla!
Monday, June 26, 2006
When searching for the quietest, nicest case for your rig, there are certain features you must look for. Some of these are Size, Air Flow, and Expandability. Thermaltake has been making cases along with their other equipment, targeting the computer enthusiast and hardware modder. Thermaltake’s Aguila case looks to be a well-built and expandable case that’s sure to impress at the next LAN party!

The Thermaltake Aquila is an ATX/BTX midtower that appears quite well designed. With the side window and the modders screen door, it is very visually appealing, and is one of those cases that you could display and be proud of. Manufacturers have to keep up with today’s hardware, as cooling and flexible installation is almost essential in today’s market. Extreme air coolers, water-cooling, and phase change coolers are getting better and smaller, and are being made to be compatible with most PC cases. The Agila is advertised to hold Thermaltake’s Bigwater 735 system (but more on that later) but for now let’s see what this thing has to offer…

Nintendo DS Lite is Hefty on Features
OCmodshop :: Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Yesterday was hot and humid for 11am. Waiting for my pre-ordered Nintendo DS Lite was a nightmare, as I and other DS hopefuls stood in a line long enough to curve around the building. Too many sweaty, stinky, pimple-faced teenage boys were in front of me because unfortunately, I was the only girl in a crowd of around fifty people. It was awkward, but I dealt with it so I could get my hands on the new Nintendo DS Lite.

As I waited for the store to open, I discussed my hopes for the new DS with a few guys standing around me. We were all wondering if the new DS was going to be worth the money, as many of the people in line had an original DS too. As a marketing scheme, Nintendo lowered the price of the original DS right before the DS Lite came out, making both a whopping $129.99. Many store employees tried to convince me to buy the original, but I waited patiently for the release of the Lite system.

Computex Day 4 Coverage
OCModshop :: Sunday, June 18, 2006
Well, all things must come to an end, but I really wish that Computex’s end wasn’t at the cusp of absolutely extreme rain. I’d have to say Taipei is the only place in the world where it’ll be 28 degrees and humid as a sauna, then proceeds to rise to 30 degrees (both in Celsius), and stay just as humid. While I initially had blamed Tim Smalley of Bit-Tech for the rain (and of course, was rebutted with a cheerful thanks), it seemed like that blasted rain had followed us from Taipei, into China, where parts of this article had been written in mind. Special thanks to our sponsors at www.aberdeeninc.com and to ECS for their support on this trip,, thanks a million!!

A Look Under the Hood: Logitech MX610 Cordless Laser Mouse
OCmodshop :: Thursday, June 15, 2006

The MX610 looks and feels great. Its black and silver coloring and curvy shape give it a sleek design. Also, it is not heavy. The two AA batteries towards the back add to the weight, but overall the weight of it is quite minimal. The buttons on the MX610 are comfortable, and have different feels depending on their location; the main mouse buttons are the most easily pressed and deliver a high-pitched click. The side buttons require more effort to press, and respond with a softer and lower-pitched click. The tilt-wheel is very tactile and works exactly like you expect it to, unlike Microsoft’s huge and comparitively complicated tilt-wheel setup. Middle-clicking is easy to pull off without accidentally side-scrolling, and the steps are easy to feel. The two new communication buttons make no noise when clicked.

Anime DVD Review: Azumanga Daioh Vol 6: Graduation!
OCmodshop :: Thursday, June 15, 2006

Well, this is it… the final volume of the best series of 2004 and the series that almost instantly shot to number 2 on my favorite anime of all time list. It’s been an all too short ride for this series but does it end as strongly as it begins?

Only three episodes are shown on this volume and all of them have to do with the impending graduation that all the girls are facing. In the first episode, more talk about career and college choices are made. Chiyo has already decided to study abroad in America, Sakaki is going to go to vet school, but what about the rest of the girls? As fans of this series can imagine, not all of them have their minds made up yet.

If you like schoolgirls and anime (not necessecarially in that order), then you’ll love this!

Internet Explorer, abbreviated IE or MSIE, is a proprietary graphical web browser made by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems. It has been the most widely-used web browser since 1999.

Though released in 1995 as part of the initial OEM release of Windows 95, Internet Explorer was not included in the first retail, or shrink-wrap, release of Windows 95. The last major upgrade to Internet Explorer, 6.0 SV1, is included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 only. Version 7 of Internet Explorer is currently under development; Beta versions have been released on a regular basis, most recently build 5346.5 released April 24, 2006.

Ace Combat Zero Review!
OCmodshop :: Sunday, June 11, 2006

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War (also known as Ace Combat 6) is the next installment in the long line of Ace Combat games. Offering a few new innovations to the series as well as crystal-clear graphics and a mean multiplayer, Ace Combat 6 will appeal to veterans of the series as well as attract newcomers.

Ace Combat 6 is arguably not a flight simulation game. If this was the Namco’s intentions, they have failed, as the aerial combat tends to turn out more arcade-like. However, most players will probably not see this as a problem. Ace Combat is therefore an absolute blast to play. Non-fans of flight games will be attracted to it because of the sheer fun of playing it. The planes are easy to fly, controls are easy to find and are well laid out, and there are enough plane, missile, and special weapons options and unlockables to keep players occupied for a huge amount of time.

Scythe’s MINE Cooler Should Be Yours!
OCmodshop :: Thursday, June 08, 2006

In an ever-ending quest to find true silence, I have previously used watercooling, but today fans and cooling solutions have progressed to their its max and aircooling is becoming just as silent. Zalman is a leader in this industry, but there are many other heatsinks that do the job just as well. One of these pioneer companies is Scythe.

It is very versatile, as you can put this cooler on virually every CPU on the market today. It’s usable for Intel and AMD systems, it will fit on the AMD sockets 754 939 940, and for Intel sockets 478 and LGA 775. It gets this versatility by using interchangeable socket lockdowns that snap in the base of the heatsink (or as Scythe likes to call it “VTMS Versatile Toolfree Multiplatform System”) and is compatible with the following processors:

Oblivion Tips & Tricks from the Developers

If you feel like starting a new character, but you want to get him or her off the ground more quickly, head to the Arena after escaping the character generation sewer. The entire arena quest line will take you a few hours to beat if you’ve sharpened your fighting skills. In the process your character will probably gain several levels, and a good bit of gold to move around on some equipment upgrades before heading out to do some adventuring. Don’t forget to check the Arena coffer on the way out. This is the best way to get a character into the mix quickly.

My original prediction was that the unholiest of relics, the 1 TB drive, would be unveiled on June 6, 2006 (6-6-06) and spawn the end of the world. Nazis will ride on dinosaurs and bring a new world order, the dead will walk the earth, and FOX will sign Elizabeth Taylor to her own reality show. How did I reach such a conclusion? Let me explain…

Hard drive capacities have been climbing higher and higher, and scientists have been butting heads with the laws of physics. One of these physical laws is the “super-paramagnetic effect”, which means when magnetized bits get too close to each other, they lose magnetism and essentially erase the bit on the platter. Scientists have employed several clever tricks to get around these physical laws, pushing data densities higher and higher. The latest of these techniques that makes terabyte drives possible is perpendicular recording.

Great Games for Cheap Bastards!
Monday, June 05, 2006
Many of us cannot afford to purchase a new game every few weeks. Shelling out $50-60 is not easy, especially for video games. (Especially those who mooch off of their mommas still…(or wives…)) For those looking for something to occupy us until the next big hit, I give you “Great Games for Cheap Bastards”!!

The games listed in this article I continue to enjoy for some reason. It can’t be the graphics, as almost all of the systems have been upgraded or will be in the near future. Could it be that the plots and gameplay of these games have actually stood the test of time!? YES! They are exciting, revolutionary, and the best part, fun! Even though a few of these games have been out as long as ten years, I keep getting drawn back to them.

Go check out these great games, ya Cheap Bastard…

Half Life 2 – Episode One is Zombie Killing Fun!
OCmodshop :: Saturday, June 03, 2006

Like the pre-launch trailers said, Alyx really does hate zombies.

The cover art and trailers for Half-Life 2: Episode 1 feature Alyx Vance predominantly and rumors swirled that you would actually play as Alyx, at least for part of the game, similar to the different perspectives in the expansion packs for the original Half-Life.

Throughout Episode One’s five hours of single-player action, the perspective does not change: it stays firmly within that old familiar hazard suit. Yes, in a break with tradition, this expansion continues the story of our favorite handy-with-a-crowbar physicist.

We know you’d kill to see more of Alyx…
