Jacked Up and Good to Go!

Fresh off Blizzcon, Starcraft II was available for a 20 minute play-through at PAX. After years we finally have a chance to play a sequel to the beloved real time strategy released back in 1998.

If you’re looking for something that reinvents the genre much like Warcraft III did a few years then ago-keep looking. Starcraft II seems to not be offering much in terms of innovative ideas. What it does offer though is the tight RTS gameplay that Blizzard is known for.  The story seems interesting, the control/combat is fluid and you really can’t ask for much more.

Our time had us escorting a transport from a base to a larger transport and defending it from Zerg forces along the way. The gameplay remains almost unchanged from that of the 1998 original, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The mission itself controlled well, animated fluidly and most important-was fun. This is RTS at it’s best and while it isn’t doing anything to further the genre, it succeeds in being just that-a fun video game.

With that being said, it’s basically the same game you played in 1998, but with a fresh coat of paint. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The story seemed entertaining, and the mission we were doing looked to be a step in the right direction with creative missions.

RTS fans and fans of fun games both may owe themselves a break to check this game out. The demo should be heading out shortly and if it’s any indication to what we played. Blizzard may have another winner on their hands.

Just don’t expect anything monumental.
