DVD is soooo last year

Let's face it: DVD is on the way out as a data storage medium.  Don't believe me?  Do you remember when writable CDs were all the rage?  I do, and I have a receipt for the $1000 2x drive to prove it. Once writeable DVDs became affordable, they were the backup medium of choice, and only recently have dual-layer products become affordable.

Scientists keep making the optical data bits smaller and smaller, which is the basic fundamental difference between a CD and today's BluRay medium.  Sure, the technology has matured, and more features added to the discs, but its sheer capacity makes BluRay the storage king.

Imagine a single disc... in the same form factor... that can hold the equivilent of 71 CDs or 11 DVDs.  That is what today's Dual-Layer BluRay discs can offer you in terms of data storage.  Here's the poop directly from the Verbatim Marketing folks...

Blu-ray Disc is the next-generation optical disc format that was developed to enable recording and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.  A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over 2 hours of HDTV.  Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data while current optical disc technologies such as DVD use a red laser.  The shorter wavelengths of the Blu-ray technology make it possible to record more data on the same space.  These discs are safeguarded by Verbatim’s super hard coat which protects against everyday wear and tear.  With the rapid growth of HDTV, Blu-ray will meet the consumer demand for recording HD programming and is expected to replace VCRs and DVD recorders over the coming years.

The difference between BD-R and BD-RE

Features & Benefits

  • Supported by major electric companies (Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, LG…)
  • Record a 4X BD-R in 23 minutes
  • Recordable format for HDTV recording and PC data storage
  • Utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data allowing for more data storage on a disc with the same size as a CD/DVD
  • Wide power margin of Verbatim BD-media ensures superior drive compatibility
  • Super hard coat protects data from scratches
  • BD-R recording hardware is required for recording
  • Many Blu-ray players can also be used for BD-R media playback

The same holds true for BD-RE (rewritable) media, except that the media is currently rated for 2X

Why should you upgrade to BluRay?  We discuss that on the next page...
