Professional Gaming Headset?

Today we`ll be looking at the Razer Carcharias, a self-proclaimed “Professional Gaming Headset”. We all know Razer for their gaming mice, but recently they have also began making audio related products, of which the humble gaming headset can’t be left out.

The box claims that these headsets deliver "True-to-Life Gaming Audio, Superior clarity and deep, thumping bass".  Lets see if they can live up to this claim.

As expected, the package department did a fine job creating a nice display box.  This overall black box is decorated with the Razer logo in fashionable green and a nice silver/holographic logo, also the clear plastic insert allows you to see the product you are buying. All in all a display box that stands out.  Obviously we are more concerned about the goodies inside!

Let's have a little look on the specs side of life...

Headphones

  • Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000 Hz
  • Impedance: 32 O at 1kHz
  • Sensitivity (@1kHz, 1V/Pa): 102 ± 4dB at 1 kHzMax
  • Input Power: 200 mW
  • Drivers: 40 mm, with neodymium Magnets

Microphone

  • Frequency Response: 50 – 16,000 Hz
  • Sensitivity( @1kHz, 1V/Pa): -37 ± 4dB
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 50 dB
  • Pick-up pattern: Unidirectional
  • Cable: 3 meters, Braided Fiber Sheath
  • Connector: 3.5 mm jack (headphone and mic)
  • Cable: 3.3 meters, Braided Fiber Sheath

I'm skeptical about the frequency responses. 20 to 20K HZ is the range of a Compact Disk but the gross of the headphones cant even reproduce those ranges, or can't produce them in a proper fashion. This usually comes back as lacking volume in lower end bass or just distortion, and also gives you a more “itchy sound” (or that’s how I would describe it) as the highs are usually amplified or just sound too hard (it gets that metallic sound).

Now I’ll be fair here and say that I have tested this headphone against a range of other headsets, including those marketed towards high-end professional audio.  The reason I do this is so I can truly contrast how well the Razer headset reproduces sound.
