Introduction
Hello and welcome to my Resident Evil 5 (BioHazard 5 outside the U.S.) guide. This is the second Resident Evil guide that I write. As you may realize, english is not my native language, so, you may find some typos/spelling errors. I do encourage you to contact me so I can correct those mistakes.
As you may notice, this guide is still pretty much incomplete. This is a fairly new game and I didn't have the time yet to go through all of it and find all of its secrets. If you know something that I do not, if you have a better strategy for something or if you know a secret I don't, please, contact me. I'll be happy to add that to the guide and add your name in the credits list.
About This Guide
This guide was created aiming to contain the least amount of spoilers possible, however it may contain one or another. I apologize for that. Also, at least not for now, I do not intend to give a detailed strategy for The Mercenaries mode.
It was also written for the Japanese Xbox 360 version of the game, but it should work just fine for the US and Playstation 3 and PC versions. If you're playing the PS3, PC or the US version and notice something different, please, let me know.
Controls
If you have played Resident Evil 4 before (which is highly recommended), RE5 controls will be very similar. In its essence, it is the same game, with a few tweaks in the gameplay and, of course, several technical advances. It also incorporates a few elements from BioHazard 0, where you had to team up with your partner to accomplish certain feats.
In the controller settings of the game, you'll find the following choices:
- Vibration - Turns vibration on and off.
- Aiming controls - Inverts the X, Y or both axis.
- Aiming speed - adjusts how fast your aim is going to move.
Control types:
- Type A: It's essentially the same control scheme used in BioHazard 4. BH4 vets will definitely go with this one.
- Type B: It's a mix of Gears of War with BH4. Instead of holding RT to aim and X to shoot, LT will aim while RT will shoot.
- Type C and D: Now the right analog pad is used to aim and rotate your char while the left analog pad is used for moving your character only.
Control Techniques
While it may seem a straightforward game, there are a few control techniques that are not that clear to newcomers.
- Running: holding A + walking will make your character run. That's usually useful to avoid enemies, enemy fire, etc.
- Partner locating: sometimes you'll need an item your partner has, or you'll have to go near him to aid him. Simply press and hold the Locate Partner button to find him.
- Wall hugging: that's something new to the series. If you're near a wall that can be hugged, an icon will appear in front of your character. While next to the wall, it'll be easier to hit and avoid being hit by enemies, and also, you don't have to aim to reload your weapon.
- Melee hits: when your enemy is stunned or fallen on the ground, get close to him and an icon will appear with the available action. Try several melee hits for a nice combo!
- Partner action: while all single person actions require you to press X, some actions will require both you and your partner, and that is done pushing the B button.

General Techniques
Here is some general advice for those playing the game. Follow these to increase your chance of success in the game.
- Reload! Make sure that your weapons are always reloaded. You never know when an horde of Mojitos will appear, so you want to have all the weapons you're carrying to be fully reloaded.
- Don't use the same weapon as your partner! You'll want to have your weapons fully upgraded, and you don't want to upgrade the same weapon twice. Try to split with a long/short range weapon for each. Also, using a shotgun and a handgun as your primary short range weapons will make it easier for you to split the ammunition between your two characters.
- Save the herbs! Don't waste precious herbs healing yourself for minor wounds. Green herbs can be mixed with red herbs, going from a 33% heal to a 100% heal. Also, if you're with your partner, depending on the way you're hit, you get an extra 25% of critical health which is added if your partner saves you. So make sure you really need to heal yourself before doing so.
- Break and open everything! Boxes, crates, piles of fruits, lockers, chests... The more you find items the easier your gameplay will be. Also, treasures are the best way of raising money so you can buy items and upgrade your weapons.

Before You Start
If you are playing for the first time, you'll start with Chris Redfield. On a New Game+, you're given the choice between Sheva and Chris.
This guide will detail only on Chris' part (which is almost identical to Sheva's). After I'm done with it, I'll add hers.
I will constantly refer to places on the map being on the north, south etc. To find out where the north is, open the GPS, there's going to be a small icon on the top left corner of it which always points to the north. Besides that, the GPS will usually show an yellow arrow pointing towards your goal, that's usually where you should head to progress in the game.
Also, I am not covering any online co-op details. There shoudn't be any differences from playing a local or online game, but this guide does not intend to cover any online features yet.
Small treasures, weapons and health items will not be pinpointed. When you're done with an area, take your time to explore it and collect any items you may find useful. Continued...
