Title : Fallout 3 DLC Interview with Jeff Gardiner

Jeff Gardiner Answers Our Questions!

Recently I got the chance to speak with Jeff Gardiner, lead producer for Fallout 3 DLC about the latest addition to the multi award winning game.

OCMS: What is the background and setting for the new material?

JG: Operation: Anchorage is allows the player to discover the location of a secret military installation housed deep inside of Washington, D.C. The Brotherhood of Steel Outcasts are trying to requisition top-secret military technology from a long dead war… But the only way to open the safe is by successfully completing a training simulation in which the player will have to liberate Anchorage, Alaska from an invading Red Chinese occupying force. This battle played out hundreds of years ago, and is a staple of the Fallout 3 canon. Once inside the sim the player will have to utilize stealth and combat cunning to overcome a huge military presence; they’ll even have the opportunity to outfit and order their own Strike Force in the process!

OCMS: Do you need to finish Fallout 3 in order to access the new material and how will it fit in with the storyline of Fallout 3?

JG: No, Operation: Anchorage allows the player to access the content at any time once they’re in the Wasteland. The story itself weaves in both the Brotherhood Outcasts as well as other pre-war Fallout lore, but does not impact the main story of Fallout 3 itself.

OCMS: What made you decide to release the new content in this format rather than a full add on?

JG: Releasing DLC as several smaller packs allows a player to pick and choose the content they like to play and utilize in order to customize their experience. The downloadable distribution itself is a great way for people to quickly and seamlessly add in functionality to their game with just a few clicks.

OCMS: Will new weapons and items be included and if so what will they be?

JG: Yes, there will be new weapons and items! There is a new scoped energy weapon, the Gauss Rifle – the most powerful sniper rifle in the game. Also, the player will be able to find a Chinese Stealth Suit – which will allow stealth players to better ply their craft…

OCMS: What sort of new enemies will players face?

JG: Operation: Anchorage features new Chinese Combat Troops, a Chinese Screw Tank – a massive vehicle that drives through deep snow on screws, upon which is mounted a massive energy canon.

OCMS: Roughly How long will it take to play through the new content?

JG: Operation: Anchorage itself lasts about four to five hours. New weapons, items and armor acquired upon complete on the simulation are usable by the player throughout the rest of the Fallout 3 world, however.

OCMS: Where do you see the series heading in terms of future chapters? More DLC, an add on, or a new game?

JG: There are two more pieces of Downloadable Content in addition to Operation: Anchorage in the works. The next installment is entitled “The Pitt,” and will send the player to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, disguised as a slave in order to join, or usurp, a tribe of raiders that have taken over the steel yards there. The third DLC is called “Broken Steel.” This DLC will change the ending of the main quest of Fallout 3 and allow the player to continue their quest in the wasteland. It also raises the level cap to 30, add new foes, weaponry and allows the player to irrevocable alter the wasteland in profound new ways.

I have downloaded the anchorage not to put down the game or anything it wasn't that fun because it was a simulation with the ammo packs and the health pack things made it like an arcade game. other than that i am looking forward to the other dlc because i can go play the game after i beat it. one question the broken steel dlc will you be able to level up after 25

Will any of this new DLC come out for the Playstation 3?
By John Doe on Saturday, January 31, 2009 9:48:40 PM
It was quite good in my opinion, and I really enjoyed how they showed it was a simulation by using health and ammo stations here and there, as well as making you have to find weapons instead of getting them from dead enemies, but really, it was too short. 4-5 hours is an exaggeration. It took me 3 hours. Read the ign review for a pretty accurate perspective on the DLC.

Yeah, they raised the Level Cap to 30. I'm really looking forward to The Pitt and Broken Steel. But please don't release them so late in the month, It would be great if you would release The Pitt here soon, really soon, Operation Anchorage was REALLY short if you were max level....

I really wish that they had released the portion of the expansion that will raise the level cap and change the ending with the first DLC release. It is somewhat annoying to have this content but be unable to gain levels from it without starting a new character.

so far they say there are no plans for DLC for PS3 which sucks and if they do an expansion like they did for Oblivian it will not have everything the pc or xbox 360 has because of this I am shying away from bethesda unless they make it right SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was a bit disapointed with opperation anchrage, mostly being because it was WAY to short (the goodies at the end where prety good, although worth the $10...i dunno). I hope the broken steel dlc really delivers.

if you have a ps3 get 360 its better
By jenna on Wednesday, February 04, 2009 4:31:55 PM
@kiki... That's debatable. Each console has their strengths and weaknesses. The only way to get the best of all worlds is to buy them all, which I did. Most people can only afford one, and for that person the 360 is probably better... unless you want Bluray... then it's a tossup. But if you're gonna buy bluray then you have gold-lined pockets anyway.

Free roam RPG is catching on on the PS3, so you too bethesda will soon no longer be needed. Just like you do with Ps3 owners when it comes to download content, you will be tossed aside.
By interpid on Friday, February 06, 2009 10:37:10 PM
360 is some crap just keep on buying exclusive content because that the only way 360 get sales period
    By auron27 on Saturday, February 07, 2009 5:06:06 AM
What is the free roam RPG you are referring to on PS3 ? And when will it be out?
By youremycasualty on Sunday, February 08, 2009 12:56:38 AM
Bethesda should have increased the level cap on each dlc. Thats why I had to put it the game down until I could level up. That is one of the key elements of bethesda's work, LEVELING. Why change a good thing? Or did they mean too?
By vladnazty on Sunday, February 08, 2009 8:19:39 PM
The new dlc was alright, the gun was nice and the armor let me steal whatever i want, but when is the next download coming out. I NEED MORE!!!!!!!
