Install Flash on x64
We are at a weird crossroads of technology. On one hand, common users are starting to need 4 gigabytes of RAM (read how to enable it in Vista), and on the other 64-bit operating systems are struggling for compatibility. Microsoft has tried to steer the industry into the 64-bit era by making the 64-bit version of Vista as seamless as the x86 version. Unfortunately, the rest of the computer industry hasn't gotten the memo, so there are plenty of drivers and other software that just don't plain work right on Vista x64.
For example, Adobe must really want their users to start using Microsoft's new Silverlight technology (a rich media technology similar to Flash). Adobe has recently released a new version of Flash, and yet there is no version for 64-bit browsers. That means that the person using Vista x64 either has to miss out on the latest websites, or they have to use a 32-bit version of Firefox. Trying to install Adobe onto Internet Explorer (32-bit or 64-bit) seems to work, but users are still met with the infamous "you need to install flash" message.
Here's how to successfully install Flash on the Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) so it works with all of your browsers.
For Vista (32 bit):
- Open File Explorer
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
- Right-click on FlashUtil9f (or whatever version you downloaded)
- Select Run as Administrator
- If you haven't turned UAC off, then you'll get a prompt. Let the wizard install
- Enjoy Flash
For Vista x64:
- Open File Explorer

This NEITHER works on Explorer x64 NOR Firefox x64 as these ARE 64BIT BROWSERS. 64Bit browsers REQUIRE 64BIT plugins. Until Adobe, please see their website for details, writes a 64 bit version of Flash (note that EVEN FLASH 10 Beta is NOT 64BIT), NO plugins that AREN'T 64 BIT will EVER be supported.

Yes, there is no 64-bit version of flash yet... which is why I wrote an article on how to enable flash content in 64-bit browsers. After doing these steps I no longer get the 'you need to download flash' messages...

The above instructions do not work for a 64 bit browser on Vista. running a 32 bit browser(ie7) on a 64 bit will however work but it is not 64 bit. I agree with H.J. Adobe is not working in ernest on a 64b bit.

I had tested this article, and I lost my time. I use minefiled x64 and can't use flash x86 on my x64 browser.It only work in x86(32 bits) browsers

What a crock. Why go through the process of putting out an article like this when it plainly refuses to work on 64bit solutions? Did you not actually TEST it via your 64bit browser? It's NO GO, jimmy. Nada. Flash only runs via the 32 bit browser on the 64bit system, which is what you're probably running. All these guys that are getting the FLASH to work on their 64bit machines probably just running teh 32bit version of the browsers. What a bust.

Before I tried this, I got the 'you need to download flash' and after I tried this then the Flash content plays fine. I'm on Vista 64 running 64-bit IE.

I dont think so. I still contend you are in the 32bit browser. Flash 10, their latest player, does NOT WORK in 64bit IE. They admit it themselves. They are claiming that Flash 11 will finally offer 64bit support but as of yet, it's no go. I still cant believe people are saying this. I have not seen on single 64bit browser run FLASH without moving to 32bit. Adobe is rushing to get this going in #11 but are way behind the 8 ball

For those insisting they are on the 64bit IE, go to your HELP, and ABOUT. Notice how it does NOT say 64bit. All Vista 64bit systems include BOTH versions of IE and default to the 32bit version.

I bought a brand new dell studio laptop on 3 11 09. It has the Vista 64bit os. On the Dell Dock (icon bar at the top) the internet explorer icon is that of the 64 bit version (flash does not work). Go to the start button and at the top you will find another icon for internet explorer...it's the 32bit or non 64bit version!...... flash works!! check it out!!

Um - seriously, does this actually work for anyone on Win7 x64?? Been hunting high & low for a working solution. Sorry, but have run twice over now, and in both cases, I load up IE8x64 (no bother installing FFx64 until I see it working with at least IE)

... hop over to YouTube as a test case, and get "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player." got x64 Java, so is definitely Flash. Thought was too good to be true (apologies if double posted - the post engine needs to learn to count!)

@abstrait - one can load IEx64 quite easily from the start menu.. default or not!!
Have actually switched all other app over to a x64 default in Win7, but till I have Flash or a viable alternative, can't do so for either IE or FF

The only thing that works for 64 bit is to follow Ali Harmon's directions posted 3 11 09: Go to start menu, use the IE that does NOT say 64 bit and use it instead of the new version. Adobe, pleaase get on the ball.

The point of this post was not that it lets you run Flash in a 64-bit browser (which is impossible - they haven't released it yet except for a Linux alpha version), but it just disables the pop-ups that ask if you want to download Flash when visiting sites using Flash in your 64-bit browser.

Glorianne, it works just as he said it would - Until Adobe gets with it,this is the way to go. Use IE 64bit from the start menu.
