How to Limit Roku Bandwidth

Roku 3 Back

Media streamers can sometimes choke your Internet connection, especially if they are streaming in high-definition. One of the more notorious of the stream stealers is the Roku 3, which will by default use up to 3.5 megabits!  Here’s the secret how to limit Roku bandwidth.

The screen to configure this setting is hidden, and a secret code must be entered to access it.

On the Roku remote, enter this sequence of keys:

  1. Press Home button 5 times.
  2. Press Rewind (<<) 3 times.
  3. Press Forward (>>) 2 times.

You will then be presented with a new hidden configuration screen which lets you choose between the following settings:

  • Automatic
  • 3.5 Mbps
  • 2.5 Mbps
  • 2.0 Mbps
  • 1.5 Mbps
  • 1.2 Mpbs
  • 1.0 Mbps
  • 0.6 Mbps
  • 0.3 Mbps

Choose whichever one suits your bandwidth needs.  The OCmoffice has a 50 megabit downstream connection, and although there was theoretically plenty of bandwidth available, we would notice connection timeouts on other devices with the Roku happily nomming on 3.5 megabits of bandwidth.

We turned this setting down to 1.5 Megabits (roughly 150 KB/sec) and things seemed to calm down.  Our test Roku 3 still connected to a high-definition signal on all the Hulu and Netflix programs.
