A New Perspective : Intel’s “Woodcrest” Xeon Previewed

Game PC :: Monday, June 26, 2006
Today at the GamePC Labs, we’ve taken a look at Intel’s new “Woodcrest” based Xeon processors, also known as the 5100 series. These new processors are based on Intel’s “Core” architecture, providing significant improvements in terms of performance, heat production, and power consumption in comparison to Intel’s (also brand new) 5000-series Xeons. We compare a set of mid-range “Woodcrest” Xeons to several Xeon and Opteron processors, and we see some impressive results all around.

Thermaltake Safari BX-01 BTX CPU Cooler Review
Gaming Objects :: Monday, June 26, 2006
Unfortunately, as this is really the first (and unfortunately, maybe the last) BTX heatsink review, the Safari stands on its own. By that I mean that I don’t know how it rivals the reference solution, or other marketed coolers. There is one thing I can tell you, though. The second you boot the PC, it’s like somebody’s slammed a NOS bottle hooked up to a Screamer. This fan gets frelling loud. Even as the fan spins down and you idle into windows, it still has a thick, powerful growl that’s more than willing to turn into a whooshing whine at the first chance. In the endgame with all its Ups and downs, it came to a point where I’d rather listen to an infant cry next to my ear than hear this heatsink. Sorry folks!

Prey Tweak Guide
Tweaknews :: Monday, June 26, 2006
I was so impressed by the Prey Demo released recently, I decided to create a Prey Tweak Guide to complement this great game. Although Prey is firmly based around a modified Doom 3 engine, and as such much of my current Doom 3 Tweak Guide applies to the game, the in-game settings are sufficiently numerous and different to warrant clear explanation and screenshot comparisons, and I’ve also taken the time to go through the various major console commands and weed out any ones which don’t work for Prey, along with adding a few new commands which Prey brings to the Doom 3 engine. Give the guide a read through to make sure you get the most out of this innovative and refreshing game.

Half Life 2: Episode One Review
Game Pyre :: Monday, June 26, 2006
This game grabs you right at the beginning continuing right as you left off. Once you get started, the game play and pace is a little different than the original Half Life 2. After you readjust, the game is smooth and slick with a few repetitive patches. This game is really meant for the player who has a yearning to learn more about the Half Life 2 universe. The still impressive Source engine holds its own against is much newer competitors. Valve really has this brand on lockdown: they could probably produce ten more episodes without running out of story to tell. http://www.gamepyre.com/reviewsd.html?aid=740&p=1

Ultra Products: Microfly SFF Case Review
Gaming Objects :: Friday, June 23, 2006
Overall, I’m quite happy with the Microfly. This, of course comes after using it for a few days on end as a ‘Daily Driver’ type of machine. It’s sturdy, and has enough airspace that cooling is decent, without forward intake. On the whole, while there may have been qualms during the installation phase, things are working out nicely, and I’m quite happy with this case.

Toca 3 (PC)
Driver Heaven :: Sunday, June 18, 2006
According to Dictionary.com, ultimate is defined (in part ? more on that later) as ?representing or exhibiting the greatest possible development or sophistication,? so when Codemasters assails the gaming public with an assertion that they have created the ?Ultimate Racing Simulator,? they are making a heady claim indeed. A quick glance over the box does seem to lend support, though: ?116 Championships. . .35 different motor racing styles. . .70 different licensed race cars.? Combine the breadth of the game with the built-in credibility Codemasters gained from creating the Colin McRae Rally series (peaking with the near-perfect Colin McRae Rally 04), and the potential within the Toca concept is staggering.

New Oblivion Content: “Mehrunes’ Razor” Impressions (360)
Think Computers :: Sunday, June 18, 2006

Quote: “The Mehrunes’ Razor downloadable content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 250 MS points. According to Bethesda, they claim it is “one of the deepest and most challenging dungeons in all of Cyrodiil.” I guess that explains why they increased the price on the download compared to the previous ones. Another key feature of this content is the Mehrunes Razor, a dagger that can inflict massive damage, and has the ability to kill enemies instantly. So, are a large dungeon and an exclusive weapon worth the increased price?”

WoW Report: Finally 60
Think Computers :: Sunday, June 18, 2006

Quote: “This past week when I was questing around Silithus I finally dinged to 60! I have been playing World of Warcraft for almost 8 months! So it’s about time! Yeah it took me a LONG time to get to 60, well I am very busy and at times didn’t play the game for weeks. Enough about that so what does being level 60 get you? Well as you can see I got 52 hit points, 51 mana, 1 talent point, and a few more stats. Seriously though there are a lot of things that open when you hit 60.”

Rockstars Table Tennis
Driver Heaven :: Monday, June 12, 2006
Traditionally, when you think of Rockstar Games titles such as the illegal street racing series Midnight Club or the illicitly violent Grand Theft Auto anthology come to mind, but all of that is about to change. In a bizarre twist, Rockstar decided to release a game about the relatively new Olympic sport entitled Table Tennis. Instead of running from the police and killing hookers, this time around gamers everywhere can play one of the most accurate tennis games to date. With eleven diversified characters and an unprecedented amount of shot control, Rockstar?s Table Tennis is an amazing experience despite all of the skepticism it received in the past.
